Week Six Press Conference

posted by Lori Schmidt -

Urban Meyer revisited the win over Penn State, and he looked ahead to Saturday's game against Indiana at his weekly press conference.

  • Meyer compared the wide receiver group and their willingness to block to the 2014 receiving corp. The word Meyer used is "elite."
  • Their performance was so strong against the Nittany Lions that the Buckeyes named four special teams players of the week: Justin Hilliard, Drue Chrisman, Jeffrey Okudah, and Terry McLaurin.
  • There was a "call to arms" yesterday, where coaches told players that there were some members of the team who need to contribute more.
  • Even though the game against a very talented Penn State squad in a tough environment was a great measuring stick, Meyer has yet to see this Buckeye squad reach its potential. "There is a tremendous ceiling on this, and we haven't come close to it."
  • Despite the fact that Saturday's game was "two sledgehammers" colliding, the Buckeyes came out of the contest relatively healthy.
  • Meyer admitted that he's used the quarterback run as somewhat of a security blanket in the past, especially in short yardage situations. He's still getting used to playing a quarterback in Dwayne Haskins that doesn't really have that in his repertoire.
  • Isaiah Pryor is out for the first half of the Indiana game thanks to a targeting penalty he incurred against Penn State. Meyer said there's been no final decision made on who will start in his place. There are three guys (Jahsen Wint, Shaun Wade, and Brendon White) who are capable. They will need to see that battle play out in practice.
  • The Buckeyes tried to appeal Pryor's penalty, but an appeal is not possible. Meyer says even though there was no intent on Pryor's part to injure an opposing player, he will leave it at that.
